How far are Muzaffarnagar paper mills from the energy benchmark, and what does closing the gap do to carbon?

Some by a long way. BEE measured 10.1 to 18.2 GJ of fuel and 550 to 1,080 kWh per tonne of paper across about 29 mills, against IPPTA kraft norms of about 9.9 to 17.6 GJ of steam and 550 to 650 kWh. Its 15 projects would save about 22,800 t CO2 a year.

What the 15 projects add up to

BEE's consultants wrote detailed project reports for 15 measures, from boiler feed and flash steam recovery to paper machine hood ventilation and pressurised head boxes. Together they save 9,537,288 kWh and 396,982 GJ of heat a year. Assuming half the power and half the heat displaced fossil sources, the manual puts the cut at 22,832 t CO2: 3,815 from power and 19,017 from fuel. Most of the carbon is in the steam, not the motors.

Proof a lender will ask for

For an energy efficiency loan, show fuel per tonne and kWh per tonne for at least twelve months before, and the same after. That needs monthly coal and biomass purchases with stock change, calorific value reports, power bills or captive generation logs, and tonnes of paper reeled by grade.

Worked example: a 20,000 t waste paper kraft mill

An estimate: the mill size, current and target figures are assumed. Coal factor is the IPCC 2006 default for bituminous coal. Use your own fuel records.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads coal and biomass purchase invoices and power bills into a monthly record, so a mill can show fuel and power per tonne before and after a project. Whether a loan is approved is the lender's decision.
