Senseible

How do I calculate the carbon footprint of namkeen or fried snacks per kg?

Add the ingredients (besan, potatoes, dal, nuts and frying oil absorbed) from supplier or database factors, the fuel that heats the fryer, the plant's electricity and the packaging. Divide by kilograms packed. If the thermic fluid heater burns wood or briquettes, report that CO2 as biogenic, separately from Scope 1.

Where the emissions come from

Biomass heaters change the reporting

Many snack units fire heaters with wood, briquettes or husk. The CO2 from burning biomass is biogenic: report it outside the scopes as a separate figure. The small methane and nitrous oxide from combustion stay in Scope 1. Keep the purchase records for the biomass, because a buyer may ask whether it came from waste residues.

Per kg of what

Divide by product packed and sold, after rejects. Oil absorption varies by product, so if you report several products, use the oil consumption per product from your production records rather than an average.

Common reductions

Worked example: plant energy per kg of namkeen (one month)

Inputs are illustrative; use your own bills and production records.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads the plant's electricity bills (CEA grid factor 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh, CO2 Baseline Database version 21.0) and fuel invoices (IPCC 2006 defaults) into a fingerprinted Scope 1 and 2 record, the plant-level input to a per-unit figure. Bought-in materials go to the supplier evidence trail; product reports are self-declared drafts.
