Odisha's sponge iron units: how much coal do they burn, and what CBAM data do their buyers need?

About 9.5 million tonnes of coal a year, across roughly 107 coal-based units, most in Sundargarh and Keonjhar, by BEE's count. In the 30 plants audited, coal was 99.8% of energy, about 1.6 t per tonne of DRI. For CBAM, a steel buyer needs your mass balance figure, not a coal invoice total.

Where the kilns are and what they burn

What the 30 audited plants showed

The 30 plants audited made 1,376,865 tonnes of sponge iron and burnt 2,233,044 tonnes of coal: about 1.62 t of coal per tonne of DRI. Coal was 99.84% of their energy and electricity 0.16%. Plants with 100 to 200 tpd kilns used 57% of the energy. Most plants shared their electricity bills with the auditors but not their coal and production records. That is the same gap a steel buyer's CBAM request runs into.

What a steel buyer needs from you

Where the coal goes down

BEE's manual found kiln flue gas leaving at 900 to 1,000 °C and being cooled with air or water instead of used. Preheating the iron ore with that heat cuts coal use by 20% to 25%. In its 2 x 100 tpd case, a waste heat boiler would raise about 20 tonnes of steam an hour and 4.4 MW of power. Variable speed drives on kiln drives, ID and FD fans are the electrical saving.

Screening estimate: a 2 x 100 tpd plant, one day

An upper estimate: some carbon stays in the DRI and dolochar, which only a mass balance with your own lab analyses can subtract. Do not send this as a CBAM figure.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads your coal purchase invoices, power bills and despatch records into a monthly record for each plant, so the tonnes behind a mass balance are ready when your buyer or verifier asks. The carbon analyses still come from your lab.
