How do I calculate my office's carbon footprint per square foot, including diesel backup?

Add a year of grid electricity (kWh x 0.710 kg CO2) and DG diesel (litres x 2.68 kg CO2), plus any refrigerant top-ups, then divide by the office area. Say whether you used carpet or built-up area: they differ, and the choice changes the answer.

The data to collect for twelve months

The formula

Scope 2 (kg CO2) = grid kWh x 0.710. Scope 1 (kg CO2) = DG litres x 2.68. Refrigerant leaks are Scope 1 too, in kg CO2e, because the gas is not CO2: kilograms topped up x the gas's GWP.

Intensity = (Scope 1 + Scope 2) / area. Report kg CO2 per square foot if your leases are in square feet, and also per square metre if you compare with BEE energy figures, which use kWh per square metre per year. One square metre is 10.764 square feet.

Shared buildings and landlord charges

In a multi-tenant tower your own meter covers your floor. Common areas, lifts and the central chiller are usually run by the landlord and recovered through maintenance charges. If you do not control those systems, you can report your share in Scope 3 Category 8, upstream leased assets, and keep it out of the per square foot figure for your own space. Whatever you choose, write it down and keep it the same every year.

Why the number moves

Worked example: a 10,000 sq ft leased office

Figures are illustrative. No refrigerant top-up was recorded that year; if one was, add it in kg CO2e and say the total includes other gases.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads your electricity bills (billing period, tariff category, sanctioned load, units) and applies the CEA grid factor of 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh, CO2 Baseline Database version 21.0, for location-based Scope 2. It reads DG diesel invoices with litres and applies the IPCC 2006 default of 2.68 kg CO2 per litre, keeping each bill as evidence.
