How do I calculate the carbon footprint of a pedestal fan?
Weigh the motor, blades, guard, stand and base per fan and multiply by supplier figures. Add winding, moulding, painting and assembly energy, then divide the plant's energy by fans made.
Material
- Motor with copper or aluminium winding.
- Plastic or metal blades and steel guard.
- Steel stand and plastic or metal base.
Process
- Motor winding and assembly.
- Moulding blades and parts, and painting metal parts.
- Assembly and run testing.
Per fan
Report per fan by sweep and weight. Use-phase electricity is usually far larger than the factory figure, so give the rated wattage too.
Worked example: plant energy per fan (one month)
- Electricity: 40,000 kWh x 0.710 = 28,400 kg CO2
- Fans made: 20,000
- Plant total: 28,400 / 20,000 = 1.420 kg CO2 per fan
- Add motor, blades and stand for the full figure
Inputs are illustrative; use your own bills and production records.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads the plant's electricity bills (CEA grid factor 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh, CO2 Baseline Database version 21.0) and fuel invoices (IPCC 2006 defaults) into a fingerprinted Scope 1 and 2 record, the plant-level input to a per-unit figure. Bought-in materials go to the supplier evidence trail; product reports are self-declared drafts.
