What is the difference between EPR plastic credits and carbon credits?

EPR certificates prove that a registered processor recycled or processed a quantity of plastic, so a producer, importer or brand owner can meet its legal EPR target. A carbon credit represents one tonne of CO2e reduced or removed, verified under a carbon standard. EPR certificates cannot offset emissions.

Side by side

Why an EPR certificate is not a carbon credit

An EPR certificate counts mass handled. It does not measure the emissions avoided, it has no baseline or additionality test, and it is not verified as a greenhouse gas reduction. It also exists to meet a legal duty that you have anyway, so it cannot be claimed again as a voluntary climate action.

Voluntary plastic credits are different again

Verra's Plastic Waste Reduction Standard issues plastic credits for tonnes of waste collected or recycled. These are also measured in tonnes of plastic, not CO2e, and are not carbon credits. Buying them does not change your greenhouse gas inventory.

What Senseible does here

Senseible keeps the invoices for EPR certificate purchases as evidence and its carbon credit pages explain eligibility signals for real emission reductions. EPR certificates are not treated as carbon credits.
