How do I calculate the carbon footprint of a pocket spring mattress?
Weigh the steel springs, foam layers, fabric and non-woven per mattress and multiply by supplier figures. Add spring coiling, pocketing, quilting and assembly energy, then divide the plant's energy by mattresses made.
Material
- Steel spring wire.
- Polyurethane or latex foam layers.
- Ticking fabric, non-woven pocket fabric and adhesive.
Process
- Coiling springs and sealing them in non-woven pockets.
- Quilting the cover.
- Assembly, roll-packing or flat packing.
Per mattress
Report per mattress by size and weight. Foam and steel usually make up most of the footprint.
Worked example: plant energy per mattress (one month)
- Electricity: 60,000 kWh x 0.710 = 42,600 kg CO2
- Mattresses made: 6,000
- Plant total: 42,600 / 6,000 = 7.100 kg CO2 per mattress
- Add spring wire, foam and fabric for the full figure
Inputs are illustrative; use your own bills and production records.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads the plant's electricity bills (CEA grid factor 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh, CO2 Baseline Database version 21.0) and fuel invoices (IPCC 2006 defaults) into a fingerprinted Scope 1 and 2 record, the plant-level input to a per-unit figure. Bought-in materials go to the supplier evidence trail; product reports are self-declared drafts.
