How do I calculate the carbon footprint of poha (rice flakes) per kg?
Start with the paddy per kg of poha and its farm figure, then add soaking, roasting and flaking energy. Divide the mill's fuel and electricity by kg of poha packed and add the pouch or bag.
Raw material
- Paddy by weight per kg of poha.
- Husk and bran sold as by-products.
- Water for soaking.
Process
- Roasting, often with a husk or wood fired furnace.
- Flattening rollers.
- Cleaning, grading and packing.
Per kg
Report per kg of poha. Paddy farming usually carries more of the footprint than the mill, mainly from field methane.
Worked example: poha unit per kg (one month)
- Electricity: 20,000 kWh x 0.710 = 14,200 kg CO2
- Diesel: 500 litres x 2.68 = 1,340 kg CO2
- Kg dispatched: 200,000
- Plant total: 15,540 / 200,000 = 0.0777 kg CO2 per kg
- Add paddy for the full figure
Inputs are illustrative; use your own bills and production records.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads the plant's electricity bills (CEA grid factor 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh, CO2 Baseline Database version 21.0) and fuel invoices (IPCC 2006 defaults) into a fingerprinted Scope 1 and 2 record, the plant-level input to a per-unit figure. Bought-in materials go to the supplier evidence trail; product reports are self-declared drafts.
