How do I calculate the carbon footprint of a pressure cooker?

Weigh the aluminium or stainless steel in the body and lid, multiply by the metal supplier's footprint per kg, and add the gasket, handles, valve, your plant's energy per unit and the packaging. The metal usually makes up most of the figure, and recycled aluminium carries far less than primary.

Metal source matters most

Aluminium made from scrap usually carries a small fraction of the emissions of primary aluminium. Ask your circle supplier what share is recycled and for a figure per kg. Scrap from your own trimming, sold back to the supplier, should not be counted as a credit inside the product footprint unless you follow a stated method for it.

CBAM is not the issue here

Aluminium and steel kitchen articles under headings 7615 and 7323 are not in Annex I of the EU CBAM Regulation today, so EU buyers ask for footprints for their own reporting, not for CBAM. A December 2025 proposal could change that for downstream goods.

Worked example: plant energy per cooker (one month)

Inputs are illustrative; use your own bills and production records.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads the plant's electricity bills (CEA grid factor 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh, CO2 Baseline Database version 21.0) and fuel invoices (IPCC 2006 defaults) into a fingerprinted Scope 1 and 2 record, the plant-level input to a per-unit figure. Bought-in materials go to the supplier evidence trail; product reports are self-declared drafts.
