What does the Pune rubber component cluster use in energy, and what do auto OEMs ask?
Your power bills answer most of an OEM's carbon request. Pune's 80 or so rubber component units used 42.3 million kWh, 536 t of LDO and 75 t of diesel in 2017-18, so electricity is 87% of their energy and about 94% of their CO2. Add your parts output and you have a per kg figure.
The cluster (2017-18)
- About 80 units: 25 micro (20 to 100 t of raw material a year), 45 small (100 to 500 t), 10 medium (500 to 1,000 t).
- The 10 medium units use 59% of the energy; a typical one uses 2.4 million kWh a year.
- Some units burn LDO in boilers for autoclave curing steam; diesel only for standby generators.
- Natural rubber is 25 to 40% of raw material; synthetic rubbers such as NBR and EPDM are largely imported.
What an OEM asks
- Scope 1 and 2 for your plant, for a stated year.
- Energy by type: kWh, litres or tonnes of fuel.
- Often a per part or per kg figure for what you supply them.
- Sometimes raw material footprints, which you get from your rubber suppliers.
Getting to per kg
- Twelve months of kWh from bills, LDO and diesel from invoices.
- Total CO2 with factors named.
- Divide by kg of compound processed or kg of parts dispatched; say which.
- Allocate to one OEM by its share of your kg, unless a press line runs only its parts.
Biggest cuts
Servo drives on injection moulding machines save 20 to 30% of their power. Better insulation on heated platens and thyristor heater control also help. On 94% grid CO2, these show up in the next OEM figure.
Cluster and a medium unit (estimate)
- Electricity: 42.3 million kWh x 0.675 = 28,553 t CO2
- LDO: 536 t x 3.186 = 1,708 t CO2; diesel: 75 t x 3.186 = 239 t
- Total about 30,500 t; power is 94% of it
- Medium unit: 2.4 million kWh x 0.675 = 1,620 t CO2 a year from power

What Senseible does here
Senseible builds supplier evidence from your bills and fuel invoices, with the factor on every line, so the figure you send an OEM can be checked.
