Does power from dolochar count in a Raigarh sponge iron unit's emissions?
Yes. Dolochar is the char left after the coal based kiln, and burning it in your boiler releases fossil CO2 from its fixed carbon. Count it in Scope 1 from tonnes burned and a carbon content test. The power it makes then cuts what you buy from the grid.
Why it is not free
Dolochar is a by product, but its carbon came from coal. Treating it as zero hides real emissions and buyers who audit the kiln balance will spot the gap.
How to count it
- Weigh dolochar sent to the boiler each month.
- Test its fixed carbon, or use a recent lab report.
- CO2 = tonnes × carbon share × 44/12.
- Add it to the coal burned in the kiln, without counting the same carbon twice.
For CBAM
Sponge iron is a CBAM good. Power made from dolochar inside your boundary is part of the direct emissions of the plant, so the kiln and the boiler go into one figure.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads fuel, electricity and freight invoices into a dated, fingerprinted record per site, so each figure you send a buyer traces back to the documents behind it.
