Senseible

Can RECs generated last year cover this year's electricity in my Scope 2?

Usually not for a claim buyers will accept. The GHG Protocol asks for certificates issued and redeemed as close as possible to the period of consumption, and RE100 and many buyers set their own vintage window. Match the generation date to your reporting year. An Indian REC staying valid until sold does not change that.

Two different clocks

The decision rule to use

  1. Match generation to your reporting year: for April 2026 to March 2027, use RECs generated in that period.
  2. If a buyer, CDP or RE100 applies its own vintage window, follow theirs and quote it. For RE100, read the vintage clause in the current RE100 Technical Criteria on there100.org rather than an older summary.
  3. If you still use older vintage certificates, disclose the vintage and the volume, and expect a reviewer to discount them.
  4. Never use the same certificates for two reporting years, or for a renewable obligation and a voluntary claim.

What happens to the uncovered units

Electricity not covered by a valid instrument takes the residual mix in market-based Scope 2. India publishes no residual mix, so use the CEA grid average of 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh and say why. Location-based Scope 2 stays the same whatever certificates you hold.

The Scope 2 revision may tighten this

The GHG Protocol's proposed revision of the Scope 2 Guidance, still a public-consultation draft as of October 2026, would move market-based claims towards hourly matching of generation and consumption. Nothing in it is final. If adopted, a year-old certificate would fit even less well, so plan purchases on same-year vintage now.

Worked example: 1,200 MWh with mixed vintages

What Senseible does here

Senseible reports location-based Scope 2 from your bills at 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh, and market-based Scope 2 from the certificate data you supply, including volume and vintage. It does not buy, hold or redeem RECs.
