How do I count the emissions of a regenerative thermal oxidiser (RTO)?

Count the support fuel burnt in the RTO at its IPCC default factor and the fan electricity at 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh. Also count the CO2 formed when the solvent vapours burn, from their carbon content, as Scope 1. An RTO prevents VOC release, but its own fuel and power still count.

Three parts

Data to keep

Gas meter readings for the RTO, a sub-meter for the fans, and the solvent mass balance from purchase and recovery records. Without a sub-meter, use the fan rating times hours and label it an estimate.

Cutting the load

Higher solvent concentration in the fumes can let the RTO run with less support fuel; track support gas per hour before and after any change, with dates.

Worked example: one RTO (one month, illustrative inputs)

Inputs are illustrative; use the RTO gas meter and fan sub-meter.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads the plant's electricity bills (CEA grid factor 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh) and fuel invoices (IPCC 2006 defaults) into dated, fingerprinted Scope 1 and 2 records. A per-unit figure divides those by the output you enter, and purchased materials are added from supplier data on the Scope 3 trail, labelled by source.
