How do I calculate the carbon footprint of ready-to-eat retort pouch meals?
Weigh the ingredients per pack, such as rice, dal, vegetables, oil and spices, and use supplier figures. Add cooking fuel, retort steam, filling and sealing electricity and the multilayer pouch and carton, then divide plant energy by packs passed.
Ingredients and pack
- Cooked ingredients per pack from the recipe and yield.
- Multilayer retort pouch, often with aluminium foil.
- Carton sleeve and shipper.
Process
- Cooking kettles on steam or gas.
- Filling, sealing and retort sterilisation with steam.
- Cooling water, chillers and incubation testing.
Per pack
Report per pack with its net weight. Ambient storage is a plus point for these packs, since no cold chain is needed.
Worked example: retort plant per pack (one month)
- Electricity: 40,000 kWh x 0.710 = 28,400 kg CO2
- PNG: 15,000 SCM x 2.05 = 30,750 kg CO2
- Packs passed: 300,000
- Plant total: 59,150 / 300,000 = 0.197 kg CO2 per pack
- Add ingredients, pouches and cartons for the full figure
Inputs are illustrative; use your own bills and production records.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads the plant's electricity bills (CEA grid factor 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh, CO2 Baseline Database version 21.0) and fuel invoices (IPCC 2006 defaults) into a fingerprinted Scope 1 and 2 record, the plant-level input to a per-unit figure. Bought-in materials go to the supplier evidence trail; product reports are self-declared drafts.
