Which greenhouse gases must our SBTi target and inventory cover?
All relevant emissions of the seven gases the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard requires: carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, HFCs, PFCs, sulphur hexafluoride and nitrogen trifluoride. For a factory, refrigerant leaks from chillers and cold rooms are HFC emissions, so electricity and fuel alone are not enough.
The list
- Carbon dioxide (CO2).
- Methane (CH4).
- Nitrous oxide (N2O).
- Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs).
- Perfluorocarbons (PFCs).
- Sulphur hexafluoride (SF6).
- Nitrogen trifluoride (NF3).
What counts as relevant
The criteria ask for all relevant emissions of these gases in the target boundary, covering company-wide Scope 1 and Scope 2. No more than 5% of combined Scope 1 and 2 may be excluded from the inventory or the target boundary.
Where a plant usually misses one
- HFC top-ups in air conditioning, chillers and cold stores.
- Any of the other six gases that your equipment or fuels release.
Check your records
Look at service invoices for gas top-ups and at your equipment list. A refrigerant top-up bill is the usual evidence for the HFC line.
What Senseible does here
Senseible turns your invoices and bills into verified Scope 1 and 2 records, and shows where supplier data is still missing for Scope 3. Verified here means rule checks passed against the evidence. It is not third-party assurance, and it does not validate targets: only the SBTi's validation process does.
