Should an Indian carbon project seek Article 6 authorisation or stay in the voluntary market?

Seek authorisation only if your activity is on India's approved Article 6.2 list and your likely buyer is a country or an airline under CORSIA that needs authorised units. Otherwise stay in the voluntary market, where corporate buyers accept credits without a corresponding adjustment, the process is shorter, and India's NDC is untouched.

What authorisation gives you

What it costs you

A decision rule

  1. Not on India's list: stay voluntary, or look at the CCTS offset mechanism for a domestic route.
  2. On the list, buyers are corporates making voluntary claims: stay voluntary unless they will pay more for adjusted credits and say so in writing.
  3. On the list, buyers are a country under a bilateral deal or CORSIA airlines: seek authorisation before you sign the offtake, and make the price conditional on it.
  4. Unsure who the buyer is: register in the voluntary market first and apply for authorisation for later vintages if a qualifying buyer appears.

Do not sell the same tonne twice

Once units are authorised and first transferred, the matching tonnes leave India's account. Keep vintage and quantity records so that authorised and unauthorised credits from the same project cannot overlap, and say clearly in each sales contract which kind the buyer gets.

What Senseible does here

Senseible shows carbon credit eligibility signals from a project's energy data and keeps the invoices behind them; the authorisation decision and application sit with the developer and India's National Designated Authority.
