How much CO2 does making hydrogen from natural gas release per kilogram?

The reforming chemistry alone releases 5.5 kg of CO2 per kg of hydrogen. Adding the gas burnt to heat the reformer usually takes the total to roughly 9 to 10 kg per kg. Use your own gas meters for both feed and fuel rather than a published average.

Where the CO2 comes from

How to calculate yours

Take metered feed gas plus fuel gas, convert to energy with the gas analysis, multiply by the gas factor, and divide by tonnes of hydrogen made. Credit only CO2 that is captured and stored or sold into a product with contracts.

Comparing with green hydrogen

India's Green Hydrogen Standard sets 2 kg CO2e per kg as the threshold, so grey hydrogen sits several times above it.

Worked example

The fuel share depends on the plant; use your own meters.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads fuel, electricity and freight invoices into a dated, fingerprinted record per site, so each figure you send a buyer can be traced back to the documents behind it.
