Can South Africa's carbon tax reduce an EU buyer's CBAM cost on Vaal steel?

Possibly, but only for the tax effectively paid on the emissions embedded in the exported steel. Article 9 lets the EU declarant claim it, net of tax free allowances, offsets and rebates. With allowances, many emitters pay a small share of the headline rate, so the deduction is often modest.

What can be claimed

The carbon tax is a price on greenhouse gases, so it can qualify. The claim covers the amount actually paid for the year, attributed to the tonnes shipped, not the headline rate per tonne.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads your fuel and electricity bills into dated, fingerprinted installation records, the starting point for the actual emissions your EU importer asks for, and its CBAM cost calculator estimates certificate cost from 2026 to 2034 for covered goods. Senseible does not verify emissions or file CBAM declarations.
