Does sprinkler irrigation use more or less energy than flood irrigation?
Sprinklers need pressure, so each litre takes more pump energy, but they usually apply much less water than flooding. The net energy per acre depends on how much water you save and how deep your water source is. Compare pump kWh or diesel per acre over a season.
What decides it
- Water applied per acre with each method.
- Pump pressure needed for the sprinklers.
- Depth of the borewell or source.
How to compare
Electric pump: kWh per acre x 0.710. Diesel pump: litres per acre x 2.68. Use the same crop and season.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads fuel invoices and electricity bills and applies IPCC 2006 factors and the CEA grid factor (0.710 kg CO2 per kWh), so you can compare Scope 1 and 2 before and after a change from the documents themselves.
