Can a back-pressure turbine on a process steam line generate power in a textile unit?

Yes. BEE's Surat report puts a 40 kW turbine beside the pressure reducing valve, taking 3 t an hour of steam from 10.5 to 3.5 kg/cm2 and making about 302,400 kWh a year. But the boiler must burn more coal to replace that energy, so CO2 falls about 40 to 50 t a year, not 257 t.

The setup in the report

The money as the report sees it

The power is not free

A PRV keeps all the steam's heat for the process. A turbine turns part of it into power, so the steam reaching the process carries less heat and the boiler has to make it up. Per kWh sent out, roughly 1.1 kWh leaves the steam and, at 75% boiler efficiency, about 1.5 kWh of extra fuel heat goes in (both estimates). That is still cheap power, roughly 70 to 100 t of extra coal or lignite a year here, depending on its heat value, but it has to come off the saving and the CO2.

Before you buy

  1. Check steam flow through the PRV over a full week; the turbine earns only when steam passes.
  2. Price the extra coal at today's rate and take it off the Rs 16.93 lakh.
  3. First check whether the boiler can simply run at lower pressure; that saves fuel with no turbine at all.

CO2 per kWh from the turbine

Generator efficiency 90% and boiler efficiency 75% are estimates; coal and lignite use IPCC 2006 defaults for sub-bituminous coal and lignite; grid at CEA's FY 2025-26 factor.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads electricity bills into monthly records with CO2, so the fall in grid power shows. It has factors for Indian and imported coal by the kg but none for lignite, so work the extra boiler fuel as above; the green loan check shows what a lender asks for.
