How much gas and CO2 per tonne do Surendranagar's ceramic units use?

TERI's 2017-18 profile of 26 Wadhwan and Joravarnagar units, mostly electrical porcelain, found 4.26 million scm of gas and 4.14 million kWh a year, 0.128 to 0.176 toe per tonne. On today's factors that is about 11,500 t CO2, roughly 0.42 t per tonne of product. Gas is about three quarters of it.

Where the gas goes

Gas from Gujarat Gas fires tunnel kilns of 3 to 5 tpd, up to 45 m long, at 1,100 to 1,300 °C, with firing taking up to three days. Thermal energy is 89% of the total. In most kilns gas flow follows temperature while combustion air stays fixed, so when gas cuts off, cold air keeps sweeping heat up the stack. Kiln cars are heavy: dead weight is about 24% of the load.

Fixes and what they save

What to send a buyer

When a switchgear maker or utility asks for your footprint, send kg CO2 per tonne fired, with gas in Scope 1 and power in Scope 2 shown separately, the months covered, and whether rejects are in the tonnes. Ceramic products and insulators are not CBAM goods, so this is a buyer request, not an EU customs one.

Worked example: a medium unit

TERI reported 822 t for this unit using older factors. Gas factor 2.05 kg per scm and CEA grid factor for FY 2025-26 (version 22.0). Use your own bills.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads Gujarat Gas and PGVCL bills into a monthly record, so a unit can show gas and power per tonne fired and prove a kiln saving from its own bills.
