How should a Tamil Nadu mill count emissions from coal shipped in through Thoothukudi port?

Burning the coal is your Scope 1. Shipping it from Indonesia or South Africa, port handling and trucking to the mill are Scope 3, Category 4, upstream transport, usually small next to combustion. Use tonne kilometres by mode with GLEC style factors, or the shipper's own figure, and keep it apart from your combustion figure.

Pieces of the journey

Working it out

Tonnes from the bill of lading, distance by mode, and a factor per tonne kilometre for bulk carriers and trucks. ISO 14083 and the GLEC Framework set out the method.

Proportion

Combustion of a tonne of coal releases far more CO2 than shipping it. Get the combustion figure right first.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads fuel, electricity and freight invoices into a dated, fingerprinted record per site, so a copper product figure can be traced back to the documents behind it. Factors outside India are entered from the official source and labelled.
