Are steel chains, springs and wire rope covered by the UK CBAM?
No. HMRC's UK CBAM list covers chapter 73 headings 7301 to 7311, 7318 and 7326 only. Stranded wire and ropes (7312), chains (7315) and springs (7320) are not listed, so they are outside the UK CBAM from 2027. Steel wire itself, under 7217, is covered.
Not listed
- 7312 stranded wire, ropes and cables of iron or steel.
- 7315 chains and parts.
- 7320 springs and leaves for springs.
Listed, so covered
- 7217 wire of iron or non-alloy steel: for example 3.329 tCO2e per tonne for fine uncoated low-carbon wire, 4.440 if zinc coated.
- 7326 20 00 articles of iron or steel wire: 3.309.
- 7318 screws, bolts, nuts and washers.
Watch for changes
HMRC updates codes when the UK tariff changes, and the government keeps scope under review. Check the list each year before signing long contracts.
What Senseible does here
Senseible builds a per-tonne footprint from wire rod, fuel and power invoices for buyers that ask, whether or not CBAM applies. We build the figure from your records and check every figure in-house; for the UK it must then be verified by a verifier accredited for UK CBAM. Have your own verifier? Send it to them.
