What errors do UK CBAM verifiers look for in plant data?
HMRC's guidance names them: failed fuel meters or weighbridges, mistakes copying meter readings into spreadsheets, wrong unit conversions, failed data loggers, and spreadsheets reused from last year with formulas never updated. The verifier plans its checks around where these errors are most likely in your plant.
Inherent risks: errors before any control
- Monitoring equipment failing, such as fuel meters and weighbridges.
- Errors between reading a meter by hand and typing it into a spreadsheet.
- Wrong calculations or wrong unit conversions for fuels and materials.
Control risks: errors your checks miss
- Automated controls failing, such as data loggers or pressure and temperature correctors on gas meters.
- Internal audits that miss spreadsheet errors.
- The same spreadsheet used for several years without updating its formulas for the current period.
Cheap fixes before the audit
- Reconcile metered fuel against purchase invoices each month.
- Lock formula cells and date-stamp each year's workbook.
- Keep unit conversions in one sheet, with the factor and its source.
- Keep calibration records for every meter and weighbridge.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads quantities straight from invoices and bills, which removes the retyping step and gives a second total to check meters against. We build the figure from your records and check every figure in-house; for the UK it must then be verified by a verifier accredited for UK CBAM. Have your own verifier? Send it to them.
