How much coal does a Varanasi brick kiln burn, and how much does a vertical shaft or zigzag kiln save?

A typical Varanasi Bull's trench kiln burns about 720 t of coal a season for 40 lakh bricks, 18 t per lakh. BEE's project report puts a vertical shaft kiln at 10.5 t per lakh, saving 300 t of coal a year. Zigzag firing sits between the two.

The cluster

Energy per kg of brick

Tonnes per lakh ignores brick weight and coal quality. The report measures 1.1 to 1.5 MJ per kg of fired brick in Varanasi. Its table puts fixed chimney kilns at 1.1 to 1.4, zigzag at 0.8 to 1.1 and vertical shaft at 0.7 to 1.0 MJ per kg.

The vertical shaft kiln case

Records a lender or buyer wants

  1. Coal bought each season, by invoice and weighbridge slip.
  2. Bricks fired and bricks sold, with average fired weight.
  3. Any wood or sawdust, kept separate as biogenic.

What Senseible does here

The green loan check shows what a lender will ask before a kiln conversion; Senseible reads coal invoices and weighbridge slips into season totals.
