How does a Verra credit from India get an Article 6 label?
Verra adds Article 6 labels to VCUs the host country has authorised for specific uses under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. For an Indian project that means a letter of authorization from India first; you then follow Verra's Article 6 Label Guidance v1.0 and submit its Letter of Authorization Checklist with the label request.
Do you need the label at all?
Often not. VCS Standard v5.0 says VCUs used for voluntary market purposes do not need Article 6 or other Paris-related labels, though labelled VCUs can be used voluntarily too. The label matters when a buyer will use the credit toward another country's target, CORSIA or another international purpose that requires authorisation and a corresponding adjustment.
The steps
- Check your activity is on India's list of activities approved for Article 6.2.
- Apply to India's National Designated Authority for a letter of authorization that states the authorised uses.
- Check the letter against Verra's Article 6 Letter of Authorization Checklist for Project Proponents.
- Submit that checklist with your request for an Article 6 Authorized label, following the Article 6 Label Guidance v1.0.
- Point your buyer to Verra's "Choosing the Right Article 6 Label" resource, as there is more than one label type.
The rules that come with it
VCUs used under Article 6 or CORSIA must meet every requirement of those mechanisms, including on double counting and corresponding adjustments. Verra states these apply equally to Annex I and non-Annex I countries.
What Senseible does here
