We supply a buyer and plan Verra credits from our factory project. What must we publish about our product?
A statement on your website. VCS Standard v5.0, section 3.22.7, says that if you buy or sell a product whose emissions footprint your project changes, you must publish, by the date of validation, that carbon credits may be issued through your VCS project for the reductions associated with your named product.
The wording Verra sets
"Carbon credits may be issued through Verified Carbon Standard project [project ID] for the greenhouse gas emission reductions or carbon dioxide removals associated with [project proponent or authorized representative organization name(s)] [name of product(s) whose emissions footprint is changed by the project activities]."
When it applies to you
When the project proponent or its authorized representative buys or sells a good or service in a supply chain, and the project activities change that product's emissions footprint. Verra's own example is a project using CO2 in concrete production, which changes the concrete's footprint. A forging unit that moves its furnace from furnace oil to a biomass gasifier and sells forgings to a car maker is in the same position.
What you are not responsible for
Verra says the proponent is not responsible for preventing other companies in the supply chain from reporting the reductions in their Scope 3 emissions. The statement is the safeguard: it tells your buyer, and anyone reading its report, that credits may exist for the same reductions.
Steps before validation
- List every product whose footprint the project changes, by the name your buyers know it by.
- Publish the statement on your website with the project ID, no later than the validation date.
- Tell your main buyers before they read it online. Their Scope 3 team will ask how this affects the footprint you send them.
Example: the statement filled in
- Carbon credits may be issued through Verified Carbon Standard project [your project ID] for the greenhouse gas emission reductions or carbon dioxide removals associated with [your company name] forged crankshafts and connecting rods.
Use your own project ID, company name and product names. The fixed words come from section 3.22.7.
What Senseible does here
Senseible keeps your plant's fuel and electricity records from before and after the project, the figures your buyer's Scope 3 team will ask about once the statement is public. Verra issues the credits, not Senseible.
