How does a ferro-manganese smelter in Vizianagaram work out a CBAM figure for an EU buyer?
Ferro-manganese (7202 1) is a CBAM good. Count direct emissions only: carbon in coke, coal and electrode paste by mass balance, less carbon in the alloy and slag. Divide by tonnes of alloy. Silico-manganese is not covered.
Mass balance
- Carbon in coke, coal and electrode paste.
- Carbon leaving in the alloy and slag.
- Fuels for ladle heating.
Mixed plants
If a furnace switches between ferro-manganese and silico-manganese, keep campaign records so the covered product's emissions can be shown apart.
Electricity
Smelting uses a lot of power, but for this good it is not counted in the CBAM figure. Buyers may still want it for their footprints.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads fuel, electricity and production documents into dated, fingerprinted installation records, the starting point for the actual emissions an EU importer asks for.
