Can waste heat recovery credits from a sponge iron plant carry the CCP label?
Not today. ICVCM's assessment status table places three waste heat recovery methodologies under Verra's VCS, ACM0012, AMS-III.Q and AM0066, as Very Unlikely To Meet the Core Carbon Principles. AM0066 is the one written for pre-heating raw materials in sponge iron making. None has a CCP-Approved route.
What the table says
- ACM0012, waste energy recovery, versions 1.0 to 6.0: Very Unlikely To Meet.
- AMS-III.Q, waste energy recovery, versions 1.0 to 6.1: Very Unlikely To Meet.
- AM0066, waste heat used to pre-heat raw materials in sponge iron manufacturing, version 1.0: Very Unlikely To Meet.
- All three are listed under Verra's Verified Carbon Standard.
What "Very Unlikely To Meet" means
ICVCM's Categories Working Group sorted credit categories into three kinds of assessment: internal, multistakeholder, and "very unlikely to meet", which were deprioritised in the schedule. It is a triage, not a Governing Board decision. But a CCP label needs a CCP-Approved methodology, so in practice there is no label for these credits today.
Why a DRI plant owner should care
- Buyers who require CCP-labelled credits will pass on these credits, whatever the tonnes.
- The table speaks only to the label. Whether a methodology is still open to new projects is set by the programme, so check its methodology page before spending on documents.
- A CCP-Eligible programme can ask ICVCM to assess a new methodology or version, so this can change.
The value you keep either way
Waste heat power that replaces grid purchases cuts your Scope 2, and that saving is yours to report to buyers, lenders and under BRSR whether or not any credit is sold.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads your electricity bills and fuel invoices, so the grid power a waste heat plant replaces shows up in your Scope 2 records, and it gives carbon credit eligibility signals. It does not label, rate or sell credits.
