Which emissions does Senseible not calculate from my documents?
From documents alone, Senseible does not calculate refrigerant leaks, SF6, process emissions such as limestone calcination, or methane and nitrous oxide from fuel. It also gives no figure for a kVAh-only bill, a fuel in a unit without a factor, purchased steam, or a Scope 3 line without an approved factor.
Sources that an invoice cannot measure
An invoice records a purchase, not what escaped or reacted on site. A refrigerant top-up invoice shows gas bought, not gas leaked; SF6 in switchgear, CO2 released when limestone or dolomite is heated, methane from effluent treatment and emissions from captive generation all need measured or metered data. Senseible gives no figure for them from documents. Meter and hardware feeds are set up with the Senseible team for each customer, so ask the team what can be measured at your site.
Limits on fuel figures
- Fuel factors are CO2 only, from IPCC 2006 defaults. Methane and nitrous oxide from combustion are not added; at IPCC stationary combustion defaults they add well under 1%.
- A factor applies only in its own unit: diesel, petrol, furnace oil and kerosene per litre; coal, LPG, CNG and naphtha per kg; PNG per scm. Diesel billed in kg, or naphtha billed in litres, gets no figure rather than an assumed density.
- Biomass CO2 is recorded as zero because it is biogenic, and it is never credited against other emissions.
- Purchased steam and heat have no factor in the published set.
Limits on electricity figures
- A bill billed only in kVAh, with no kWh and no power factor printed, is kept with no emissions until the kWh or power factor is supplied.
- kvarh, kW and kVA figures are never converted into energy.
- Net-metered units are not treated as consumption; the import reading is needed.
- The published grid factor is India's (0.710 kg CO2 per kWh, CEA CO2 Baseline Database version 21.0). Where no factor exists for the country of use, no figure is produced.
Limits on Scope 3 lines
A Scope 3 invoice line gets a figure only from printed activity data, such as quantity and unit, or weight and distance for freight, times an approved factor for that material and geography. The document reader does not turn a rupee amount into emissions on its own; where only spend is available, Senseible can provide a spend-based estimate, labelled as spend-based and shown with its wider uncertainty. If any input is missing the line is marked Needs Data, and if a reconciliation check fails it is marked Needs Review; neither counts in totals. Avoided emissions from green purchases are shown separately and never subtracted from the inventory.
Worked example: one month of documents
- Diesel invoice, 1,000 L: 1,000 x 2.68 = 2,680 kg CO2, calculated
- Electricity bill, 10,000 kWh: 10,000 x 0.710 = 7,100 kg CO2, calculated
- Refrigerant top-up, 3 kg R-32: kept as evidence, no figure
- HT bill printed only in kVAh, no power factor shown: kept, no figure until kWh is supplied
- Reported total: 9,780 kg CO2, with two documents flagged for data
The two flagged documents are not zero emissions. Add measured data for them, or disclose them as an exclusion in your report.
What Senseible does here
This page states Senseible's coverage under methodology BIOCOG_MVR_INDIA v1.1, so nobody relies on a figure it does not produce. It flags the missing items instead of estimating them; filling those gaps needs your measured data or a sourced factor.
