How much sawdust and electricity does a typical plywood unit use compared with a peeling unit or saw mill?

Far more. A typical Yamunanagar plywood unit burns 1,382 t of sawdust and uses 171,160 kWh a year, 457 toe, against about 4 toe for a peeling unit (50,281 kWh) or a saw mill (48,384 kWh). Sawdust is 97% of a plywood unit's energy, and its CO2 is biogenic.

Three kinds of unit

Where the plywood unit's heat goes

Planks come in at about 50% moisture and are dried to 3 to 5% in seasoning chambers over 5 to 7 days, with steam coils and circulation fans. Sheets go through hot chambers, impregnators or stenters, then the hot press. The fuel is sawdust from the unit's own production.

What a buyer gets from you

For a plywood unit, fossil CO2 is mostly the power bill. Report sawdust CO2 as biogenic on its own line, count the methane and nitrous oxide from the boiler in Scope 1, and give resin as a separate purchased input. A peeling unit or saw mill can send kWh per square foot or per tonne and be done.

Unit figures from TERI's Yamunanagar profile. Sawdust energy is total toe less electricity; biogenic CO2 uses the IPCC 2006 default for wood. Grid factor from CEA for FY 2025-26.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads your power bills into monthly kWh and CO2 and builds the supplier evidence trail a buyer checks, each figure linked to the bill behind it.
