Carbon Credits for Solar Installations: How to Monetize
Published 2025-01-15.
Solar installations reduce grid electricity consumption, which means fewer emissions. These reductions can potentially be monetized as carbon credits.
How Solar Creates Carbon Value:
Every kWh of solar power displaces grid electricity. In India:
- Grid average: 0.710 kg CO2/kWh (CEA CO2 Baseline Database v21.0, FY 2024-25)
- Solar: 0 kg CO2e/kWh (operational)
- Difference: 0.710 kg CO2 saved per kWh
Example Calculation:
Suppose a 100 kW rooftop solar system generates 150,000 kWh/year:
- Emission reduction: 150,000 × 0.710 = 106,500 kg CO2
- Annual reduction: about 106 tonnes CO2
- Potential value: 106 tonnes × the price a buyer will actually pay, which varies widely by standard, vintage and project type
Eligibility Requirements:
- Additionality: Would you have installed solar without credit revenue?
- Baseline: Document pre-solar grid consumption
- Monitoring: Track actual generation vs baseline
- Verification: Third-party validation of data
Reality Check:
Not all solar installations qualify for carbon credits. Key factors:
- Installation date matters
- Existing incentive programs may affect eligibility
- Verification costs can eat into small project returns
Getting Started:
- Document your pre-solar electricity baseline
- Track solar generation data
- Verify your reductions
- Explore monetization pathways
For smaller installations, bundling with other MSMEs through platforms like Senseible can make credit generation more viable.
