How do we count an accidental gas or refrigerant release in Scope 1?
Count it. Estimate the mass released and multiply by its global warming potential. A refrigerant burst counts at the gas GWP. A natural gas leak counts as methane at 29.8 times CO2. Unburned LPG is not one of the reported greenhouse gases, but record the incident and the fix.
How to estimate the mass
- Refrigerant: the top-up needed to refill the system after repair.
- Gas cylinders: weight before and after.
- Pipeline gas: meter readings or an engineering estimate of leak time and flow.
What to keep
- The incident report with date and cause.
- The refill invoice or cylinder weights.
- The repair record, so the leak is not counted twice.
What Senseible does here
Senseible keeps each record linked to its source document and marks estimates as estimates, so a verifier can see what was measured and what was assumed.
