What is the difference between a certified and an accredited energy auditor?
A certified energy auditor has passed BEE's exam. An accredited energy auditor has also logged five years of audits, three in energy intensive industries, and passed a BEE interview on five audit reports. BEE listed 304 accredited auditors in October 2026.
Requirements for accreditation
- Certified energy manager who has passed Paper IV, the performance assessment paper.
- Five years of energy audit experience after certification, at least three in energy intensive industries.
- Five detailed audit reports with client feedback.
- At least four calibrated instruments: clip-on power meter, flue gas analyser, temperature and lux meters, calibrated by an NABL lab.
- An interview by BEE's accreditation advisory committee.
Fees and validity
The application fee is Rs 1,000 and the annual accreditation fee is Rs 1,000. Accreditation stays valid until cancelled under the regulations.
Which you need
- Designated consumers: mandatory energy audits by an accredited energy auditor.
- MSMEs not under the Act: a certified auditor is usually enough, unless a scheme asks for an empanelled or accredited one.
