Senseible

How do I count advertising, trade fairs and marketing spend in our Scope 3?

Marketing spend is a purchased service, so it sits in Scope 3 Category 1. Use activity data where you have it, such as paper for catalogues and materials for stalls, and a spend-based estimate for agency fees and digital ads. Staff travel to trade fairs goes in Category 6, not with the marketing spend.

Split the marketing ledger by what was bought

Keep these out of the marketing line

When it matters

For a manufacturer, marketing is usually a small share of Scope 3. For a consumer brand that outsources manufacturing, it can be one of the larger service categories. Estimate it once to see which case you are in, then decide how much effort it deserves.

What to record

Keep the invoices with a note of the method used for each line: activity-based with the quantity, or spend-based with the factor source and its price year. That lets a reviewer follow the number.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads service and purchase invoices and uses printed quantities where they exist; where only spend is available it gives a spend-based estimate labelled with wider uncertainty.
