How do I calculate the carbon footprint of an aluminium extrusion per kg?

Per kg of good extrusion, multiply the billet bought per kg of good profile by the billet's footprint from your supplier, then add press, oven and finishing energy per kg. The billet usually makes up most of the result, so whether it is primary or recycled metal changes the answer more than anything you do in the plant.

The formula

kg CO2e per kg extrusion = (billet kg per kg good extrusion x billet factor) + (billet heater and ageing oven fuel per kg x fuel factor) + (press, puller and utilities kWh per kg x 0.710) + anodising or powder coating per kg + packing.

Recovery and scrap

Butt ends, front and back cuts and rejected lengths mean you buy more billet than you ship. Recovery of good profile from billet is often 80 to 90%, so billet per kg of good extrusion is 1.1 to 1.25 kg.

Charging all billet to good product is the simple, conservative choice. If your scrap goes back to the billet supplier and is credited against new billet, you may count net metal instead, but say so in the method note.

Getting a billet factor you can defend

A product footprint is not your CBAM number

Extruded bars, rods and profiles (CN 7604) are CBAM goods. Under the CBAM Regulation only direct emissions count for aluminium goods: the embedded direct emissions of the unwrought aluminium you used plus your own site's direct emissions. Your purchased electricity is left out of the CBAM figure but stays in the product footprint a buyer asks for.

So keep two numbers from the same records: a cradle-to-gate footprint for buyers, and the CBAM embedded emissions calculated by the CBAM method.

Worked example: one month at an extrusion plant

Billet factors are illustrative only; use the supplier's figure for each lot.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads the PNG, diesel and electricity bills behind an extrusion footprint (Scope 1 at IPCC 2006 defaults, Scope 2 at 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh) and keeps billet purchases in the Scope 3 evidence trail by HSN code and kg. Product reports are self-declared drafts, and its CBAM cost calculator works from the embedded emissions you enter.
