How does a garment factory in Kenya's Athi River EPZ report diesel backup alongside grid power?
Grid power is Scope 2 at Kenya's factor, which is low because most power comes from geothermal, hydro and wind. Diesel burnt in your own generators is Scope 1 at about 2.68 kg CO2 per litre. Report both separately so a brand can see how much outages cost in emissions.
Two lines
- Grid kWh from bills times the Kenyan factor: Scope 2.
- Litres of diesel times 2.68 kg CO2 per litre: Scope 1.
Why separate
On a clean grid, a week of diesel can outweigh a month of grid power. Showing it makes a case for a battery or solar backup.
Records
Power bills, generator fuel receipts and run hour logs.
Worked example: one month
- Grid: 60,000 kWh x 0.1 (assumed Kenyan factor) = 6,000 kg CO2, Scope 2
- Diesel: 4,000 L x 2.68 = 10,720 kg CO2, Scope 1
- Diesel is 64% of the month's total: 10,720 / 16,720
The grid factor here is an assumption for illustration. Use the official or IEA figure for the year.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads electricity, fuel and boiler invoices into a dated, fingerprinted record per factory, so the figures a brand asks for can be traced back to the bills.
