When does BRSR Core value chain assessment become mandatory, and what does it mean for suppliers?
Under SEBI's circular of 28 March 2025, it is not mandatory. Value chain disclosures are voluntary for the top 250 listed companies from FY 2025-26, and assessment or assurance of them is voluntary from FY 2026-27. For suppliers, requests can still come, through customers that choose to report or through contract terms.
How the timeline has changed
- July 2023: SEBI's BRSR Core circular asked the top 250 listed companies for value chain disclosures on a comply or explain basis from FY 2024-25, with limited assurance from FY 2025-26.
- March 2025: SEBI made value chain disclosures voluntary for the top 250 from FY 2025-26, and made assessment or assurance of them voluntary from FY 2026-27.
- The same circular allows 'assessment' as an alternative to 'assurance' for BRSR Core, and narrows the value chain to partners that each make up 2 percent or more of purchases or sales, and lets the company limit disclosure to partners covering 75 percent of purchases or sales.
What could make it mandatory later
Only a further SEBI circular. SEBI has revised these dates more than once, so treat any date as provisional until a new circular says otherwise. Watch for changes in the scope of companies covered, the 2 percent test, and whether assurance becomes required.
What this means for a supplier now
- A customer that reports voluntarily will send a data request, usually in the months after the financial year closes, since BRSR is filed with the annual report.
- If the customer opts for assessment or assurance, the provider may sample your bills and invoices, not just your totals.
- A supply contract or supplier code can make data sharing a condition even when SEBI does not.
- Using April to March figures, the same factors each year and documents for every line keeps you ready either way.
What Senseible does here
Senseible keeps your Scope 1 and 2 records for the financial year with each line tied to its bill or invoice, so you can send totals to a customer and show the documents if an assessor asks.
