What does the BRSR life cycle assessment question ask for?
It is a Principle 2 leadership indicator, so voluntary. It asks whether you have done a life cycle perspective or assessment for any product or service, and for each: NIC code, product name, share of turnover, the boundary, whether an independent agency did it, and whether results are public.
The fields
- NIC code and name of the product or service.
- Percentage of total turnover it contributes.
- Boundary for which the life cycle perspective or assessment was done.
- Whether it was conducted by an independent external agency.
- Whether results are communicated in the public domain, with a web link.
The follow-up question
Leadership indicator 2 asks for any significant social or environmental concerns found through the assessment, or by other means, and the action taken. So an LCA that finds a hotspot should come with a plan.
Start with the products that matter
Pick the products with the largest share of turnover or the most customer requests. A cradle-to-gate boundary is common for manufacturers and is honest to state. Supplier data on materials and energy is usually the largest gap.
What Senseible does here
Senseible turns a supplier's electricity bills and fuel invoices into Scope 1 and 2 figures for the financial year, with each bill linked to its line, so a customer's questionnaire can be answered from records. Figures are self-declared.
