How do I work out BRSR environment energy and emissions from a year of bills?
Total each fuel and electricity for April to March, multiply by its emission factor for Scope 1 and 2, and by its energy content for GJ. 480,000 kWh, 12,000 litres of diesel and 3,000 kg of LPG give about 382 t CO2 and about 2,301 GJ.
Steps
- Add up kWh from twelve electricity bills.
- Add up litres and kilograms from fuel invoices.
- Emissions: grid kWh x 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh (CEA); diesel litres x 2.68; LPG kg x 2.98.
- Energy: kWh x 0.0036 GJ; diesel litres x about 0.0359 GJ; LPG kg x 0.0473 GJ.
- Report Scope 1, Scope 2, total energy and the renewable share separately.
Check before filing
- Twelve months present for every connection.
- Diesel used in generators counted as Scope 1, not Scope 2.
- Units shown on every figure.
Worked example
- Grid: 480,000 kWh x 0.710 = 340.8 t CO2 (Scope 2); 480,000 x 0.0036 = 1,728 GJ.
- Diesel: 12,000 L x 2.68 = 32.16 t CO2; 12,000 x 0.0359 = 430.8 GJ.
- LPG: 3,000 kg x 2.98 = 8.94 t CO2; 3,000 x 0.0473 = 141.9 GJ.
- Scope 1 = 41.1 t; Scope 2 = 340.8 t; total about 381.9 t CO2.
- Total energy about 2,300.7 GJ, all non-renewable.
Illustrative quantities.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads kWh, litres and kg from electricity bills and fuel invoices into a dated record per site, with the factor and source on every line, and prepares BRSR drafts from that data. Reports are self-declared drafts.
