How do I split energy into renewable and non-renewable in BRSR?
In BRSR Principle 6, list electricity, fuel and other energy twice: once from renewable sources and once from non-renewable sources, all in gigajoules. Grid power, DG diesel, coal and gas are non-renewable. Self-consumed solar, contracted green power with supply proof and biomass are renewable. Convert kWh to GJ by multiplying by 0.0036.
The rows in the table
- From renewable sources: total electricity consumption (A), total fuel consumption (B), energy from other sources (C), total (A+B+C).
- From non-renewable sources: total electricity consumption (D), total fuel consumption (E), energy from other sources (F), total (D+E+F).
- Total energy consumed, and energy intensity per rupee of turnover, per rupee adjusted for PPP, and per physical output if you choose.
Which line each source goes in
- Grid electricity from the discom: D, non-renewable, even though the grid includes some renewable power.
- Rooftop or captive solar used on site: A. Exported units under net metering are not consumption.
- Green open access, group captive or a discom green tariff: A, only with supply evidence such as the open access schedule or the green tariff bill.
- Diesel, petrol, coal, furnace oil, LPG, PNG: E.
- Biomass, briquettes, bagasse, biogas: B.
- Solar thermal water heating: C. Purchased steam from a fossil boiler: F.
Converting to gigajoules
- Electricity: kWh x 0.0036 = GJ. 1,000,000 kWh = 3,600 GJ.
- Diesel: about 0.0359 GJ per litre, from the IPCC 2006 NCV of 43.0 GJ per tonne and a density of about 0.835 kg per litre.
- LPG: about 0.0473 GJ per kg, the IPCC 2006 NCV.
- Coal: use the NCV from your lab report, because Indian coal varies widely by grade.
Points assurance providers check
- Renewable claims backed by documents, not by the generator's name.
- No double counting of solar: generation used on site goes in A, and the grid units on the bill stay in D.
- The same conversion factors in the current and previous year, with the basis disclosed.
Worked example: a mid sized plant's year
- Grid electricity: 1,000,000 kWh x 0.0036 = 3,600 GJ (D)
- Rooftop solar used on site: 200,000 kWh x 0.0036 = 720 GJ (A)
- DG diesel: 20,000 L x 0.0359 = 718 GJ (E)
- Non-renewable total: 3,600 + 718 = 4,318 GJ; renewable total: 720 GJ
- Total energy: 5,038 GJ; renewable share: 720 / 5,038 = 14.3%
The diesel conversion is an estimate from IPCC default NCV and a typical density; use your supplier's figures if available.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads electricity bills, solar generation records and fuel invoices, keeps net-metered exports out of consumption, and drafts BRSR fields from the uploaded data as a self-declared draft.
