What are the emissions from a calcium carbide furnace?
Three sources add up: CO2 from burning limestone to lime, CO2 from the coke whose carbon leaves as gas, and the large electricity use of the arc furnace. Count power at 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh. Calcium carbide is not a CBAM good.
Sources
- Lime kiln: CO2 from limestone and kiln fuel.
- Coke and electrodes: carbon that leaves as CO and is burnt.
- Electricity: often the biggest share.
Downstream
Acetylene made from the carbide releases more CO2 when burnt. That is the user's Scope 1, not yours.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads the plant's electricity bills (CEA grid factor 0.710 kg CO2 per kWh, CO2 Baseline Database version 21.0) and fuel invoices (IPCC 2006 defaults) into a fingerprinted Scope 1 and 2 record, the plant-level input to a per-unit figure. Bought-in materials go to the supplier evidence trail; product reports are self-declared drafts.
