Senseible

Can a country get a lower default grid emission factor under CBAM?

Yes, but only through the Commission. A third country can submit official data showing its grid is cleaner than the default. The factor is a five-year average, the data is due by 30 June, and the new value is adopted by amending the Default Values Act. A plant cannot apply it on its own.

The default today

Annex II of the Default Values Act gives an average grid factor per country, for about 126 countries, from licensed IEA data. A country not listed uses the 'Other countries and territories' value.

How an alternative value is set

What it means for a plant

Your monitoring method does not change. Check the Commission's website for the latest Default Values Act and emissions report template before you fill the annual report. The Commission has said the Default Values Act will be revised by 2027 at the latest.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads electricity bills into monthly kWh by connection, so whichever grid factor applies, the consumption side of the sum is ready. Senseible does not set the CBAM grid factor.
