Is potassium nitrate under CN 2834 21 covered by CBAM?

Yes. Potassium nitrate, CN 2834 21 00, is listed in the fertiliser group of Annex I, with CO2 and nitrous oxide as the gases. Fertilisers count direct and indirect emissions. The covered precursor is the nitric acid, or ammonia behind it, used to make the nitrate.

Is it covered?

Yes, whichever grade you sell. Annex I lists 2834 21 00 under fertilisers regardless of whether the buyer uses it on fields, in glass or in food. Other nitrates under 2834 29 are not listed.

Precursors to report

Default value

The Commission sets default values by CN code and country of origin in the annex to Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/2621, with a mark-up that rises over the first years. We do not quote the figure here. Open the annex, find your code and India, and treat it as the number your buyer pays on if you send nothing usable.

What to send your EU importer

The common mistake

Assuming a technical grade is out because it is not sold as fertiliser. Coverage follows the CN code, not the end use. If it is declared under 2834 21, it is covered.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads fuel, electricity and purchase invoices into dated, fingerprinted installation records, the starting point for the actual emissions an EU importer asks for. It does not file CBAM declarations or verify emissions.
