How is the CBAM figure for urea ammonium nitrate solution built from its precursors?
UAN is a mix of urea and ammonium nitrate in water. Its figure adds the embedded emissions of the urea and ammonium nitrate used, by weight, plus direct and indirect emissions of mixing. Ammonia and nitric acid sit behind both, with nitric acid N2O often the largest part.
Precursors
- Urea: from ammonia and CO2.
- Ammonium nitrate: from ammonia and nitric acid.
- Each carries its own embedded emissions.
Mixing
Blending and storage use little energy, but electricity counts as indirect for fertilisers.
N2O
Nitric acid plants without abatement emit N2O, which can dominate the figure; abatement records lower it.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads fuel, electricity and production documents into dated, fingerprinted installation records, the starting point for the actual emissions an EU importer asks for.
