Is there an official template for sending CBAM emissions data to my EU buyer?
Yes, but it is voluntary. The European Commission publishes an Excel communication template, with guidance, for installation operators outside the EU to send embedded emissions data to EU importers. Your buyer may accept another format, but using the Commission template makes the data easier for them to check and file.
Where to find it
The template and its guidance sit on the European Commission's CBAM legislation and guidance page. Download the latest version each time; the Commission has updated it, and a definitive period version may change fields.
What the template asks for
- Installation details: name, address, location and the operator.
- The goods produced, by CN code, grouped into the CBAM aggregated goods categories, and the production routes.
- The reporting period.
- Fuels and materials used, with quantities, calorific values and emission factors, giving direct emissions.
- Electricity consumed, giving indirect emissions where they count.
- Precursors bought in, with their own embedded emissions.
- A summary of specific embedded emissions per tonne of each good, direct and indirect.
How to fill it, in order
- Collect a year of fuel invoices, electricity bills and production records for the installation.
- Define the production processes and the goods each makes.
- Enter fuel quantities, and use the calorific values and factors the CBAM method allows.
- Enter electricity use and the factor that applies.
- Add precursor data from your own suppliers, or default values where allowed.
- Check the summary sheet against your own calculation before sending.
Verification in the definitive period
From 2026, actual embedded emissions used in the annual CBAM declaration must be verified by an accredited verifier. A filled template is not enough on its own; the buyer will expect the verified figures, or will use default values instead.
What Senseible does here
Senseible gives document-backed fuel and electricity quantities, with the source invoice behind each, which fill the template's energy inputs. It does not generate or submit the official Commission template, and it is not a CBAM verifier.
