What is the CBAM default value for Indian alloy steel bars, rods and wire?
Indian alloy steel other than stainless carries 7.300 t CO2e per tonne for bars and rods under CN 7227 and most of 7228, and for wire under 7229. Forged bars, 7228 10 50 and 7228 40, carry 7.350. Direct emissions only, plus the 10% mark-up for 2026.
India default values, t CO2e per tonne
- 7227 hot-rolled alloy bars and rods in irregular coils: 7.300
- 7228 10 20 and 7228 10 90 high-speed steel bars: 7.300
- 7228 10 50 forged high-speed steel bars: 7.350
- 7228 20 silico-manganese steel bars: 7.300
- 7228 30, 50 and 60 hot-rolled, cold-finished and further worked bars: 7.300
- 7228 40 bars not further worked than forged: 7.350
- 7228 70 angles and sections, 7228 80 00 hollow drill bars: 7.300
- 7229 alloy wire in coils: 7.300
Mark-up on top
Default values are raised by a mark-up: 10% in 2026, 20% in 2027 and 30% from 2028. The same mark-up applies when a default is used for a precursor.
Higher than stainless
On the India sheet, alloy bars at 7.300 carry more than stainless bars at 6.480. EN 19, EN 24 or 20MnCr5 bar shipped on the default reports more embedded tonnes than stainless bar does.
Why forging units should care
A forging usually leaves Chapter 72 for another CN code, but the bar inside it is a precursor. If your bar mill gives you no figure, the bar's default plus mark-up goes into your forging's figure, scaled by how much bar each tonne of forgings uses.
Example: bar inside one tonne of forgings, 2026
- Bar used: 1.25 t per tonne of finished forgings
- Bar default with 10% mark-up: 7.300 x 1.10 = 8.03 t CO2e per tonne of bar
- Bar share of the forging figure: 1.25 x 8.03 = 10.04 t CO2e
- Your own furnace fuel is then added on top
Example yield. A verified figure from the bar mill replaces the default line.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads coal, coke, gas, electricity and freight invoices into a dated record per site, so an actual figure you send an EU buyer traces back to the documents behind it. We build it from your records, check every figure in-house, and an accredited verifier we partner with signs it off. Have your own verifier? Send it to them.
