What is the CBAM default value for CRGO electrical steel from India?
Grain-oriented electrical steel from India, CN 7225 11 00 and 7226 11 00, carries a CBAM default of 8.580 t CO2e per tonne. Hot-rolled and non-grain-oriented electrical steel under 7225 19 and 7226 19 is 7.320. Direct emissions only, before the 10% mark-up for 2026.
India default values, t CO2e per tonne
- 7225 11 00 grain-oriented, 600 mm and wider: 8.580
- 7226 11 00 grain-oriented, under 600 mm: 8.580
- 7225 19 10 and 7226 19 10 hot-rolled silicon-electrical: 7.320
- 7225 19 90 and 7226 19 80 cold-rolled, non-grain-oriented: 7.320
- Indirect emissions: not applicable
Mark-up on top
Default values are raised by a mark-up: 10% in 2026, 20% in 2027 and 30% from 2028. A good imported in 2026 takes the 2026 mark-up.
The highest steel default on the India sheet
8.580 sits above the 7.320 for other alloy flat products and well above Indian stainless at 6.480 to 6.530. A buyer paying on it has a strong reason to ask for your actual figure.
Slitting someone else's coil
Defaults go by country of origin. If you slit or cut coil made elsewhere, check the origin on your certificate of origin before assuming the India value applies. Slitting adds little direct emissions, so the useful figure is the mill's, passed on with the coil numbers.
Route letter in the file
The file marks these lines (C). When a buyer declares the default, the free allocation deduction must use the default benchmark for the route shown for the country of origin.
Example: 200 t of Indian CRGO coil imported in 2026, on the default
- 200 t x 8.580 = 1,716 t CO2e
- With the 10% mark-up: 1,716 x 1.10 = 1,887.6 t CO2e reported
- The free allocation deduction is then taken off before certificates are counted
Example tonnage.
What Senseible does here
Senseible reads coal, coke, gas, electricity and freight invoices into a dated record per site, so an actual figure you send an EU buyer traces back to the documents behind it. We build it from your records, check every figure in-house, and an accredited verifier we partner with signs it off. Have your own verifier? Send it to them.
