How do I calculate CO2 per tonne of cement at a grinding unit that buys clinker?

Multiply the clinker share of your cement by the supplier's CO2 per tonne of clinker, then add grinding electricity, any fuel for drying slag or fly ash, and inbound transport. Clinker is nearly all of it, so the clinker supplier's figure and your clinker ratio decide the result.

The formula

CO2 per tonne of cement = clinker ratio x supplier clinker CO2 per tonne + grinding kWh per tonne x 0.710 + drying fuel per tonne x its factor + gypsum, fly ash or slag share x their factors.

Clinker ratio = clinker consumed / cement produced in the same period, from your stock and production records, not the design mix.

Getting the clinker figure

Fly ash, slag and gypsum

Fly ash and granulated slag are by-products of power plants and steel plants. Most cement protocols give them little or no production burden, but count their transport and any drying. Gypsum is mined or a by-product; use the supplier's figure or a database value, and name it.

What CBAM asks of a grinding unit

Cement under CN 2523 is a CBAM good, and clinker (CN 2523 10) is both a CBAM good and the precursor of your cement. Cement is not on the CBAM Regulation's Annex II list of direct-only goods, so both direct and indirect emissions count and grinding electricity stays in. The clinker's embedded emissions come from the supplier's installation data or the default in Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/2621. The electricity factor for indirect emissions follows the CBAM rules in Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/2547, not automatically the CEA figure.

Illustrative example: PPC with 65% clinker

Clinker factor, kWh and additive figures are assumptions; use your supplier data and bills.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads the unit's electricity bills and clinker purchase invoices, giving grinding emissions and clinker tonnes bought each month. Clinker emissions come from the supplier, and Senseible's CBAM cost tools cover cement.
