What is a normal energy use per tonne for an MSME chemical unit?

Overall 4.98 GJ, or 119 kgoe, per tonne, in BEE's study of five chemical MSME clusters, ranging from 0.44 GJ in Jamshedpur to 6.33 GJ in Ahmedabad. Product type matters more than place: averages were 9.8 GJ for API and pharma, 6.0 for dyes and pigments and 3.3 for pesticides.

By cluster

By product, which is the fairer comparison

Work out yours

  1. Add a year of fuel in GJ: gas scm x the heat value on your bill, coal tonnes x its calorific value, and so on.
  2. Add electricity at 3.6 MJ per kWh, its heat value. Some auditors count power at the fuel burned to make it, so say which convention you used.
  3. Divide by tonnes produced in the same year and compare with your product group, not just your cluster.

Where the study sees savings

Audits in 50 units found efficient boilers, thermic fluid heaters, air compressors and motors as the near-term fixes, and electric boilers, electric thermic fluid heaters, fluidised bed dryers in place of tray dryers and rooftop solar as the next step. It puts the sector's potential at 70,000 toe of energy and 270,000 t of CO2.

A dyes and pigments unit making 3,000 t a year (estimate)

An example unit, not a measured one: use your own bills. CO2 at 2.05 kg per scm of gas and CEA's FY 2025-26 grid factor.

What Senseible does here

Senseible reads your gas, coal and electricity bills into yearly quantities and CO2, each linked to its bill; divide by your production and you have energy and carbon per tonne to put next to these figures.
